Getting my Acer Aspire One Wireless Connection To Work

Last year my wife bought me an Acer Netbook for my birthday. Well sort of.

5 days earlier she had given birth to our second son so it was actually I that bought the netbook with her money as she breast fed and didn't get any sleep. It came installed with Limpus Linux, which while basic did the job it was supposed to do.

Unfortunately the web browser was FireFox 2 which while very good didn't work with FaceBook and was unsupported. Upgrading to FireFox 3 wasn't straight forward, neither was installing other applications like Skype so I installed Ubuntu instead. Once installed I was able to install all the good stuff I wanted. Then one day after a security update I was unable to connect to the wireless network. I tried rebooting, changing some settings and rebooting but it didn't want to know. I searched the internet but according to what I read it should have just worked.

Today I finally managed to update the BIOS. It can now see my wireless network and tells me there is a strong connection but it won't connect. I don't get an error or any feedback to tell me what might be wrong.

A new version of Ubuntu is due to hit the interwebs on Thursday, so I'll try the new version when it lands. If I still don't get any joy then I'll have to restore the original software and see if works then. It might make sense to go back to Linpus Linux first and see if the wireless works and if it does then install Ubuntu.

Yes, that sounds like a plan.
